5x Favorite Protein Powders (as an Athlete with Asthma)
Apr 02, 2024As an athlete with asthma, navigating the complex world of nutrition and the lack of protein eaten in America is crucial not only for my performance but also for excelling with asthma. It is baffling to me how undernourished I was for years with protein in my diet, no fault of anyone or even my own. The reality is, that health, wellness, nutrition, and functional fitness should be taught in school, and guess what? It isn't. And yes I took strength and conditioning classes in high school, played sports my entire life, and even took a cooking class, but none of this is a substitute for what I have learned over the past couple of years.
Now, I can only speak from the perspective of an American, so here it goes. In America, we majorly struggle to keep our macronutrient levels where they need to be, especially protein. As an ultra-endurance and strength athlete with asthma, I have learned from trial and error that I need on average 1 gram of protein for every pound that I weigh to perform at the high level that I do.
And, I give myself a headstart on my protein intake every single day by mixing and matching a diverse range of protein powders in nutrient-dense shakes that I make every morning. Today, I am going to share some of my protein powders with you.
Firstly, it’s important to note that my journey is deeply personal and shaped by specific health considerations. Being allergic to dairy and certain plant-based proteins like nuts and pea protein, my quest for the perfect protein powder is a bit more challenging. This journey isn't just about performance; it's also about health and avoiding anything that might trigger my asthma or allergies.
Ancient Nutrition's Bone Broth Protein Powder - Pure

My top choice is Ancient Nutrition's Chicken Bone Broth Protein, particularly in the pure or vanilla flavor. This choice might seem unconventional in a market flooded with whey and plant-based options, but it's a game-changer for me. The collagen content in bone broth protein is not only beneficial for my joints, skin, and overall vitality, but it's also asthma-friendly, offering a source of protein that doesn't exacerbate my symptoms.
Primal Kitchen's or Ancient Nutrition's Collagen
(Sadly since I recorded this YouTube video, it has been extremely hard for me to find how to even purchase Primal Kitchen - Collagen Peptides anymore, so while I still look for it I have switched to Ancient Nutrition's Multi-Collagen (Unflavored) and am testing out Orgain's Collagen)

Collagen's importance cannot be overstated, especially as an athlete with asthma. Our bodies need more collagen as we age, not just for aesthetic reasons like skin and hair health, but for joint and tissue repair, which are crucial for athletes. This brings me to my second favorite, Primal Kitchen's Collagen Peptides. Opting for pure, high-quality brands like Primal Kitchen ensures I'm getting the best without unnecessary additives, which is essential for someone with my dietary restrictions.
Hemp Yeah's Max Fiber

I also incorporate plant-based proteins into my diet, which brings me to Hemp Yeah's Max Fiber protein. Hemp protein is a great alternative for me, offering not just protein but also essential fiber, making it a dual-purpose supplement that supports my digestive health alongside my protein intake. This is particularly important for athletes, as we often consume high amounts of protein which can sometimes lead to digestive discomfort.
MRM's Egg White Protein and Biochem's 99% Lactose-Free Whey Protein

Diversifying protein sources is a strategy I cannot emphasize enough. It helps prevent developing new allergies and ensures I'm getting a wide range of amino acids and other nutrients. For instance, MRM's Egg White Protein and Biochem's 99% Lactose-Free Whey Protein are part of my rotation. These options provide convenience and variety, allowing me to maintain a balanced and effective diet.
Protein-Calorie Ratio
Understanding the protein-calorie ratio is critical for athletes, especially when managing weight and building muscle. This ratio helps me make informed decisions about which protein powders to include in my diet, ensuring I'm getting the most protein for the least amount of calories. It's a delicate balance, but one that's essential for reaching my fitness goals without compromising my health.
In conclusion, navigating the world of supplements as an athlete with asthma has taught me the importance of listening to my body and being mindful of my dietary choices. By focusing on high-quality, diverse protein sources and paying close attention to my body's reactions, I've been able to support my athletic performance and manage my asthma more effectively.
For those on a similar journey, remember, it's about finding what works for you. Consulting with healthcare professionals, doing thorough research, and gradually incorporating new supplements can help you make the best choices for your health and performance.
