Why I Always Run with Music And Why You Should Too

Jan 03, 2025

Can music really make you a better runner? Some purists, like ultra-running icon David Goggins, might say no, but for me, the answer is a resounding yes. As an athlete with asthma, running with music isn’t just enjoyable—it is a necessary thing I use to manage my asthma. If this is of interest to you, I highly recommend that you read this blog post and either watch the video above, or check out my podcast episode all about this on "The Athlete with Asthma Show" (check it out on your favorite podcasting platform).  Either way, I’ll share why I always run with music and why everyone should consider making it a part of their fitness routine. From improving breath control to acting as a natural painkiller and unlocking the elusive flow state, music can elevate your athletic journey in ways you never imagined.

Why Music Matters for Athletes with Asthma

Running with asthma can be a challenge, but music has been my secret weapon. Synchronizing my breath to a song’s rhythm has helped me maintain consistent airflow, calm my respiratory system, and stay focused during intense runs. It’s not just about distraction—it’s about control.

As a yoga teacher, I’ve seen how music enhances the connection between breath and movement, especially in high-intensity classes like Yoga Sculpt (Yoga + Cardio + Strength all in the same class). This same principle applies to running. Songs from my yoga playlists have become staples in my runs, helping me align my breath with my steps whether I’m training for a marathon or teaching a class.

Running with Music Reason #1: Music can help you manage and control your breathing

Mastering breath control is crucial for runners, especially those managing asthma. Audible exhales, paired with music, help expel carbon dioxide and bring in fresh oxygen, making every step more efficient. Training to breathe with music not only improves your endurance but may also create a reflexive rhythm that kicks in even without a playlist.

For anyone struggling with breath control during workouts, music can be a lifeline. It anchors your mind, calms your body, and keeps your performance steady, even during the toughest stretches.

With that being said, always bring your inhaler with you and talk to your health care professional about your specific needs.

Running with Music Reason #2: Music acts as a natural painkiller for athletes

Every runner knows the wall—that point where fatigue and pain make you want to stop. For me, music is my way through it. Studies show that music can reduce perceived exertion, acting as a natural analgesic. It’s why I reserve my playlist for critical moments during long runs and races.

During my first 100k race, I strategically saved my music for when I needed it most. At mile 37, cramps and exhaustion hit hard. Turning on my playlist shifted my focus, helping me push through the pain and regain my momentum. Music wasn’t just a distraction—it was a tool that carried me to the finish line and ultimately to victory.

Running with Music Reason #3: Music can help you unlock your flow state

Flow state—when you’re completely immersed in an activity—is every athlete’s dream. Music is my gateway to achieving it. The right playlist aligns my breath, steps, and mind, creating a seamless rhythm that propels me forward.

During my 100K ultra-marathon last year, I looped tracks like Seven Nation Army to maintain focus and energy. At mile 55, this immersion helped me overtake the race leader. Music transformed my mindset, turning exhaustion into confidence and helping me perform at my best.

Final Thoughts

Music is more than just entertainment—it’s a powerful tool that can transform your runs and workouts. Whether you’re managing asthma, striving for a personal best, or simply looking to enjoy your fitness journey, running with music can elevate your experience.

If you haven’t tried running with music yet, now’s the time. Create a playlist, hit the road, and discover why I always run with music—and why you should too.
